Does Medicare Cover a Mobility Scooter? What to Know Before You Buy

The honest answer first

Get Set Mobility does not bill insurance and is not a Medicare supplier. Every scooter on this site is bought directly, out of pocket. We would rather tell you that on the first line than let you get to checkout expecting otherwise.

That does not mean insurance is irrelevant to your decision. It means you should understand the two separate routes — the insurance route and the direct-purchase route — and choose deliberately.

How coverage generally works

Medicare Part B treats power-operated scooters as durable medical equipment. Where coverage applies, it typically requires several things to line up at once:

• A doctor's evaluation and written order documenting a medical need.
• Need inside the home — the standard is usually framed around getting around your own residence, not around going further from home.
• Evidence that a cane, walker or manual wheelchair is not sufficient for that need.
• Both the prescriber and the supplier being enrolled in Medicare.
• You meeting your deductible, with a coinsurance share of the approved amount remaining.

Advantage plans, Medicaid and private insurers each set their own rules on top of that, and details change. Treat Medicare.gov and your own plan documents as the authority, not this page — and if you are pursuing coverage, start with your doctor and an enrolled supplier in your area.

Why some people choose to buy directly anyway

Plenty of our customers could pursue a claim and decide not to. The usual reasons:

• The in-home standard is narrow. If you walk fine at home but cannot manage a parking lot, a store or a family outing, the equipment that solves your actual problem may not be the equipment a claim covers.
• You choose the scooter. Buying directly, you pick the model, the range, the seat and the color, rather than accepting what is approved.
• Time. Evaluations, documentation and approvals take weeks or months. A direct purchase ships in days.
• The gap. After a deductible and coinsurance, an approved claim is not free either.

HSA and FSA funds

Mobility equipment is often an eligible medical expense, sometimes requiring a letter of medical necessity from your doctor. Rules vary by plan, so confirm with your plan administrator before you spend, and keep the receipt.

Veterans, military and first responders

Separately from anything we do: if you are a veteran enrolled in VA health care, mobility equipment may be available through the VA itself. That is worth asking your VA care team about before buying anywhere.
